January is the month of cold and wind. The Pyrenees take most of the warnings, and the month's average still carries Filomena: on 12 January 2021, 21 zones woke up on red for cold. The irony: January's calmest corners are in the Guadalquivir valley, the same place that tops the heat warnings in August.

How to read these numbers
A zone-day is one warning zone with a warning on one day: Spain has 182 zones, so ten zones warned on the same day make ten. Each zone has its own thresholds, so a warning doesn't mean the same everywhere. And a warning is a forecast, not damage or a measurement: we count when and where warnings were issued, not how much rain fell or how hot it got.
