Bad weather in Barcelona

Updated 26 October 2026. Averages for 2019–2025; 2026 up to 26 October 2026.

Barcelona has almost the same warning days as a typical Spanish zone. What it doesn't have is typical bad weather: here the star is the sudden downpour, above all at the end of summer.

If Madrid's summer warning is for heat, Barcelona's is for rain and storms. Heavy rain is by far the city's top reason for a warning, and September is its month: short, intense downpours that reach orange and sometimes red.

Heat, on the other hand, barely produces warnings: here yellow needs a forecast high of 34 °C, and that's rarely forecast. And warnings look only at the maximum temperature, not humidity.

Barcelona has 1,731,649 inhabitants and sits in the Litoral de Barcelona warning zone (Barcelona). Warnings are issued for the whole zone: it shares them with 39 other towns, such as l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Badalona and Mataró.

Barcelona's warning zone and its neighbours

AEMET doesn't warn by city but by zone: Barcelona gets the warnings for the Litoral de Barcelona zone, outlined on the map. The zones around it have their own thresholds and their own warnings.

The best month to go (if you'd rather not see warnings)

Counting warning days and how serious they are, the quietest months in Barcelona are February and March: 1.7 and 2.9 warning days on average. The busiest is September, with 10.

If you'd rather not gamble in beach season, June usually works too.

Summers: the heat

Barcelona has 4.3 heat-warning days a year (0.0 of them orange or red). Yellow starts at a forecast high of 34 °C; orange at 37 °C; red at 40 °C.

The heat-warning season usually runs from 15 July to 12 August. The earliest one came on 24 June; the latest, on 24 August.

Few heat warnings doesn't mean cool summers: it means a high of 34 °C or more is rarely forecast.

Winters: cold, snow and wind

Winter (December to February) brings 8.4 warning days on average: rain (3.6), storms (0.9), wind (5.3) and snow (0.4).

The yellow cold warning starts at lows of −1 °C; red, at −8 °C. Snow, at 2 cm in 24 hours.

Rain and storms

Barcelona has 39 rain-warning days and 22 storm-warning days a year. The months with the most rain warnings are September, October and August.

Here the yellow rain warning starts at 20 mm in an hour or 60 mm in 12 hours; red, at 90 mm or 180 mm.

Red rain or storm days since 2019: 9 September 2019, 10 September 2019, 16 September 2022, 4 November 2024, 12 July 2025, 16 September 2026 and 3 October 2026.

Every red warning in the city since 2019 has been for rain. In Barcelona, 'warning' and 'umbrella' go together as in few places on this list.

Wind, fog and coast

Wind warnings: 10 days a year; yellow starts at gusts of 70 km/h.

How this was made

Everything comes from the archive of official AEMET warnings that Climaviso has kept since June 2018: each day counts once, at the highest level the zone had. A warning is a forecast, not damage or a measurement, and it's issued for the whole zone, not your street. We don't cover measured temperatures or rainfall: only when, and why, a warning was issued.
