How to read these numbers

A zone-day is one warning zone with a warning on one day. Spain has 182 zones: ten zones warned on the same day make ten zone-days. A day with several warnings in one zone counts once, at its highest level; each warning type counts once per type.

A warning is a forecast, not a measurement: it says a threshold is expected to be exceeded in a zone. Each zone has its own thresholds (a yellow heat warning doesn't start at the same temperature in Asturias as in Córdoba), so these numbers count how often a warning was issued, not how hot or wet it was. For measured temperature and rain, see AEMET's climate summaries.

Thresholds have barely changed: according to Maldita, maximum-temperature thresholds have changed in only 10 of the 182 zones since 2006, always upwards. More heat warnings are not explained by lower thresholds.

The archive starts on 18 June 2018, so comparisons start in 2019. More on levels, thresholds and zones in how warnings work.
