EuroVelo 8, Portbou to Cádiz, in 23 stages. Warnings 2019–2025; updated 27 October 2026.

The EuroVelo 8 is the European cycle route along the Mediterranean; in Spain it follows the coast from Portbou to Cádiz. Its warnings change with the season: heat and storms in summer, rain at the end of summer and in autumn, and wind in winter. This is what the official warnings say, stage by stage and month by month.

It's many stages through four regions: Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia and Andalusia. Here we count, for each one, the warning days in the zones it crosses, and add them up month by month.

February and May are the calmest months. August and September are the busiest: August for heat and storms, September for rain and storms. From November to February, wind is the top reason for a warning, above all in southern Tarragona, northern Castellón, Almería and the Strait.

There have been red days in all four seasons: in summer for heat, such as 17 August 2025; in autumn for rain and storms, such as 18 October 2026; and in winter for wind, such as 14 February 2026.

The EuroVelo 8's warning zones

AEMET doesn't warn by village but by zone. The EuroVelo 8 crosses 18 warning zones, each with its own thresholds and warnings: on the same day one section can have a warning and the next none.

Tips for the EuroVelo 8

Frequently asked questions

What's the best month to ride the EuroVelo 8?

By warnings, February: on average, 2.4 warning days if you ride the 23 stages that month. Then May and April. The month with the most warnings is August, with 5.9 days.

Which section of the EuroVelo 8 gets the most rain warnings?

Catalonia: on average, a rain warning on 9% of days, mostly in August, September and October.

Does the EuroVelo 8 get hot enough for warnings in summer?

In July and August, the section with the most heat warnings is Murcia: a heat warning on 25% of days, on average.

Can it snow on the EuroVelo 8?

Yes, above all on the mountain sections: snow warnings bunch up in the Litoral norte de Alicante and Valle del Guadalentín, Lorca y Águilas zones, in January, February and April. There, yellow needs 2 cm in 24 hours.

What should I do if there's a warning on my stage?

A yellow warning calls for attention, not cancelling: check the forecast and, in heat, ride first thing. With strong wind, above all crosswind, shorten the stage or wait. With storms, find shelter before the afternoon. With orange or red, follow Civil Protection's advice and don't set off.

This is not a forecast: it counts the warnings AEMET issued on those dates in past years. A warning is a forecast that a threshold will be crossed in the zone, not damage.
