Camino Primitivo weather: warnings stage by stage, month by month

Camino Primitivo, Oviedo to Santiago, in 13 stages. Warnings 2019–2025; updated 27 October 2026.

The Camino Primitivo leaves Oviedo, crosses south-western Asturias and the Lugo mountains, and joins the Camino Francés at Melide to reach Santiago. By warnings it has fewer than the Francés: in winter wind leads, with some snow in the mountains, and in June, storms. This is what the official warnings say, stage by stage and month by month.

2019 to 2025

It's thirteen stages through Asturias and Galicia. Here we count, for each one, the warning days in the zones it crosses, and add them up month by month. All of its zones get fewer warnings than Spain's typical zone.

July and August are the calmest months, although in August heat becomes the top reason for a warning. The busiest are June, with storms and rain, and January, with wind and snow.

Snow is concentrated on the mountain section, from Tineo to O Cádavo: south-western Asturias and the Lugo mountains are the zones with the most snow warnings on the route. Its red-warning days in the last eight years have been 14 and 15 November 2019, 21 December 2019, for wind, and 15 August 2025.

The Camino Primitivo's warning zones

AEMET doesn't warn by village but by zone. The Camino Primitivo crosses 5 warning zones, each with its own thresholds and warnings: on the same day one section can have a warning and the next none.

Tips for the Camino Primitivo

Frequently asked questions

What's the best month to walk the Camino Primitivo?

By warnings, August: on average, 0.9 warning days if you walk the 13 stages that month. Then July and April. The month with the most warnings is June, with 2.5 days.

Which section of the Camino Primitivo gets the most rain warnings?

A Coruña: on average, a rain warning on 7% of days, mostly in September, October and November.

Does the Camino Primitivo get hot enough for warnings in summer?

Not much: in July and August, even the section with the most heat warnings (A Coruña) doesn't reach 5% of days with a heat warning.

Can it snow on the Camino Primitivo?

Yes, above all on the mountain sections: snow warnings bunch up in the Suroccidental asturiana, Montaña de Lugo and Central y Valles Mineros zones, in January, February and December. There, yellow needs 5 cm in 24 hours.

What should I do if there's a warning on my stage?

A yellow warning calls for attention, not cancelling: check the forecast, set off early if it's for heat and have a plan B for storms or snow on a pass. With orange or red, follow Civil Protection's and the hostels' advice, and consider shortening or changing the stage.

This is not a forecast: it counts the warnings AEMET issued on those dates in past years. A warning is a forecast that a threshold will be crossed in the zone, not damage.
