Where to live in Spain, by climate

Yearly averages, 2021–2025 · updated 4 November 2026

Before you move, see how hot it really gets: how many days pass 35 °C, how many nights stay above 20 °C, how muggy it gets and how often it freezes, measured by AEMET's weather stations for 998 towns. It isn't a score or a quality-of-life ranking: it's the record, and you decide.

Cities over 50,000 people whose station was already measuring in 1991–2000: same place, same method. Sorted by the warm nights they have gained.

How we measure

The data are the daily values of AEMET's weather stations: each day's high, low and rain. For every year we count the days of 35 °C or more (and of 40 °C or more), warm nights (the low stayed at 20 °C or above), frost days (low below 0 °C) and rainy days (1 mm or more), then average 2021–2025. A year only counts with readings for at least 330 days.

Feels-like heat is the US National Weather Service's heat index, the most widely used: it combines the day's high with the afternoon humidity. As in weather apps, we never put it below the thermometer.

Humidity is the average of each day's relative humidity. Muggy days are those whose mean dew point reached 20 °C: we work it out from AEMET's daily mean temperature and humidity, and it is when most people feel the air go sticky. Nearly every station reports humidity since 2018.

Rain is the year's total in millimetres. Windy days are those whose strongest gust reached 50 km/h. Only about 140 stations measure sunshine, so it only shows near one of them. When a town's station doesn't measure humidity, sunshine or wind, we take them from another station that meets the same rules, and the town page says so.

A town only uses a station within 15 km, less than 150 m higher or lower, and about as far from the sea: the breeze that cools the coast doesn't reach 10 km inland. If no station qualifies, we give no figures for that town.

Thresholds are fixed and the same across Spain, so places compare fairly. It is what the station measured, not your street: town centres usually run a little warmer than stations, which are often at airports or on the outskirts.
