The Don Quixote route crosses La Mancha from Toledo: Consuegra and its windmills, Campo de Criptana, El Toboso, the Lagunas de Ruidera and Almagro. Heat is the warning that rules here, and July and August are by far the busiest months. This is what the official warnings say, stretch by stretch and month by month.

2019 to 2025

It's nine stretches through the four provinces of La Mancha: Toledo, Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Albacete. For each one we count the warning days in the zones it crosses, and add them up month by month.

February and November are the calmest months. From June to August heat is the top reason for a warning, with storms behind it; in winter cold and fog appear.

The yellow heat warning starts at 38 °C in Toledo and Ciudad Real, and at 36 °C in Cuenca and Albacete. La Mancha albaceteña, which the Lagunas de Ruidera stretches cross, is the zone with the most warnings on the route and also the one with the most heat warnings. In the last eight years there have been red warnings mostly for heat, such as on 14 and 15 August 2021 or 23 July 2026, but also for snow, on 8 and 9 January 2021, on every stretch at once.

The Don Quixote route's warning zones

AEMET doesn't warn by village but by zone. The Don Quixote route crosses 5 warning zones, each with its own thresholds and warnings: on the same day one section can have a warning and the next none.

What should I do if there's a warning on my route?

A yellow warning calls for attention, not cancelling: check the forecast and the DGT road status before setting off. With snow or strong wind, avoid mountain passes and mountain roads. With orange or red, follow Civil Protection's advice and put the stretch off if you can.

This is not a forecast: it counts the warnings AEMET issued on those dates in past years. A warning is a forecast that a threshold will be crossed in the zone, not damage.
