Costa da Morte weather: warnings stage by stage, month by month

Costa da Morte, A Coruña to Carnota, in 6 stages. Warnings 2019–2025; updated 26 October 2026.

The Costa da Morte is the western coast of A Coruña: Malpica, Laxe, Camariñas, Muxía, Fisterra and Carnota. Its signature warning is wind, and by warnings it's one of the calmest routes, with a very quiet summer. This is what the official warnings say, stretch by stretch and month by month.

It's six stretches from A Coruña through two zones, north-western and western A Coruña, both with fewer warning days than Spain's typical zone. For each stretch we count the warning days in the zones it crosses, and add them up month by month.

July and August are the calmest months. From October to January the warnings arrive, almost always for rain and wind; January and October are the busiest.

Wind is the signature warning: yellow starts at gusts of 80 km/h, and north-western A Coruña is the zone with the most wind warnings. Heat and snow barely count. The red warning days on the route in the last eight years have been 21 and 22 December 2019, both for wind.

The Costa da Morte's warning zones

AEMET doesn't warn by village but by zone. The Costa da Morte crosses 2 warning zones, each with its own thresholds and warnings: on the same day one section can have a warning and the next none.

Tips for the Costa da Morte

Frequently asked questions

What's the best month to drive the Costa da Morte?

By warnings, August: on average, 0.2 warning days if you drive the 6 stretches that month. Then July and June. The month with the most warnings is January, with 1.4 days.

Which section of the Costa da Morte gets the most rain warnings?

Camariñas to Carnota: on average, a rain warning on 8% of days, mostly in October, November and December.

Does the Costa da Morte get hot enough for warnings in summer?

Not much: in July and August, even the section with the most heat warnings (A Coruña to Camariñas) doesn't reach 5% of days with a heat warning.

What should I do if there's a warning on my route?

A yellow warning calls for attention, not cancelling: check the forecast and the DGT road status before setting off. With snow or strong wind, avoid mountain passes and mountain roads. With orange or red, follow Civil Protection's advice and put the stretch off if you can.

This is not a forecast: it counts the warnings AEMET issued on those dates in past years. A warning is a forecast that a threshold will be crossed in the zone, not damage.
