Camino Lebaniego weather: warnings stage by stage, month by month

Camino Lebaniego, San Vicente de la Barquera to Santo Toribio de Liébana, in 3 stages. Warnings 2019–2025; updated 27 October 2026.

The Camino Lebaniego runs from San Vicente de la Barquera, on the Cantabrian coast, to the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, at the foot of the Picos de Europa. It's a pilgrimage with its own Holy Year, short but with a clear change in weather between the coast and the valley. This is what the official warnings say, stage by stage and month by month.

It's only a few stages and just two AEMET zones: the Cantabrian coast, with fewer warning days than the median Spanish zone, and Liébana, which is above it. For each stage we count the warning days in the zones it crosses, and add them up month by month.

April and July are the calmest months; January and December, the busiest, with wind and snow. In Liébana the yellow snow threshold is 5 cm.

The red days of the last eight years have all been in summer: 11 August 2024, 15 August 2025 and 23 and 24 June 2026, for heat, and 21 August 2025, for rain.

The Camino Lebaniego's warning zones

AEMET doesn't warn by village but by zone. The Camino Lebaniego crosses 2 warning zones, each with its own thresholds and warnings: on the same day one section can have a warning and the next none.

What should I do if there's a warning on my stage?

A yellow warning calls for attention, not cancelling: check the forecast, set off early and, if it's for storms, finish the stage before the afternoon. With snow or strong wind on a col, wait or take the low variant. With orange or red, follow Civil Protection's and the mountain huts' advice, and don't go up.

This is not a forecast: it counts the warnings AEMET issued on those dates in past years. A warning is a forecast that a threshold will be crossed in the zone, not damage.
