Camino del Salvador weather: warnings stage by stage, month by month

Camino del Salvador, León to Oviedo, in 5 stages. Warnings 2019–2025; updated 27 October 2026.

The Camino del Salvador links León and Oviedo, crossing the Cantabrian mountains over the Pajares pass. It's short, but by warnings it has more than the Camino Francés, mostly because of snow in the mountains. This is what the official warnings say, stage by stage and month by month.

2019 to 2025

It's five stages: two in León and three in Asturias. Here we count, for each one, the warning days in the zones it crosses, and add them up month by month. Its two mountain zones, the Cantabrian range of León and of Asturias, get more warnings than Spain's typical zone.

From November to April snow is one of the top reasons for a warning, and January is by far the busiest month, with cold and snow. May and July are the calmest; June has a fair number of storm warnings.

Its red-warning days in the last eight years have been 14 November 2019, for wind and snow; the 15th, for rain and snow; 9 October 2024, for rain and wind; 8 and 9 December 2024, for wind and snow; and 15 August 2025, for heat.

The Camino del Salvador's warning zones

AEMET doesn't warn by village but by zone. The Camino del Salvador crosses 4 warning zones, each with its own thresholds and warnings: on the same day one section can have a warning and the next none.

Tips for the Camino del Salvador

What's the best month to walk the Camino del Salvador?

By warnings, May: on average, 0.5 warning days if you walk the 5 stages that month. Then July and September. The month with the most warnings is January, with 2.1 days.

Which section of the Camino del Salvador gets the most rain warnings?

Asturias: on average, a rain warning on 7% of days, mostly in May, June and September.

Does the Camino del Salvador get hot enough for warnings in summer?

In July and August, the section with the most heat warnings is León: a heat warning on 9% of days, on average.

Can it snow on the Camino del Salvador?

Yes, above all on the mountain sections: snow warnings bunch up in the Cordillera Cantábrica de León, Cordillera y Picos de Europa and Meseta de León zones, in January, March and December. There, yellow needs 5 cm in 24 hours.

What should I do if there's a warning on my stage?

A yellow warning calls for attention, not cancelling: check the forecast, set off early if it's for heat and have a plan B for storms or snow on a pass. With orange or red, follow Civil Protection's and the hostels' advice, and consider shortening or changing the stage.

This is not a forecast: it counts the warnings AEMET issued on those dates in past years. A warning is a forecast that a threshold will be crossed in the zone, not damage.
