Are severe-weather warnings becoming more frequent in Spain?
AEMET data up to 26 October 2026. Averages for 2019–2025. Updated 26 October 2026.
Short answer
The last three complete years (2023–2025) had 19% more warning days on average than the first three (2019–2021): 61 per zone a year against 51, from AEMET's warnings. Heat warnings went from 11 to 18. But 7 years are too few to call a climate trend, and warnings also depend on the thresholds AEMET sets.

How the year is going in warnings
How it is counted
A warning day is a day on which AEMET had at least one yellow, orange or red warning in the zone; it counts once, at its highest level. Spain has 182 warning zones and every town gets the warnings of its own. Averages use the complete years 2019–2025; provinces and regions are the average of their zones. A warning is a forecast that a threshold will be crossed, not damage, and each zone has its own thresholds: these figures measure how often AEMET warns, not the climate or the risk to a building.
